Same at Adorama. The manufacturer sets these prices.

WHAT??

You're going to spend 2024 money for a relic of the DSLRosaur age of photography, first released by Nikon in August 2017??

Great camera, but still, yesterday's camera. Watch for lightly used copies and get one today. Or, make the better decision and get a mirrorless camera.

I do not like the mirrorless because I have a lot of Nikon lenses that I can’t use on them Also I believe the 850 is a workhorse and also easier on batteries

Consider my point about paying 'new' money on a discontinued 7-year old DSLR ...

If the lens you have will work on the 850 they will also work on a Nikon mirrorless with the FTZ adapter. I have a D750 and 850 and I use their lens on my Z8.

The older screw drive lenses will not autofocus on the Nikon mirrorless cameras, even with the FTZ adaptor. Some of us who have been at this a long time have a stable of those lenses. Some of them are quite good optically. The cost of replacing them (if you have any) can be a valid reason to buy a D850 over mirrorless, especially when the D850 is becoming dirt cheap for what you get.

I would not even suggest that the D850 is a state of the art camera. Mirrorless cameras have numerous advantages Not everyone needs the speed, the electronic viewfinder etc. On the other hand, two serious advantages of mirrorless that I can think of are IBIS in many models and more accurate focusing that is done directly on the sensor instead of through a mirror that may be off. These things should all be weighed along with cost when buying a 2017 DSLR versus a mirrorless camera in 2024.

I can shoot all day with my z9 using one battery.... its much much better on batteries than I expected.

I don't care if it's mirrorless, DSLR, or TouchTone or dial telephone, the D850 is more technology for $2100 than pretty much anything else available today at that price.

If a Nikon D850 is what you want that is exactly what you should buy. Follow Paul's advice and buy a lightly used one IF you want to save money. A potential problem could take place if the camera needs service. Nikon is refusing to service old cameras and lenses after a certain period of time.
As has already been discussed with the FTZ adapter you can use your old lenses with a mirrorless camera.

Depends on the op's budget & what they shoot. You can get wildlife photos with a Z7II but the keeper rate will be much lower than with the D850. And considering Nikon should support it for at least 7 years after the last new D850 is sold & historically have supported camera models around 10 years it is no big deal. The only close replacement is the Z8 when on sale is $3700.00. And yes, I agree if one can afford the Z8 ,,,,

What!!!! A camera without a mirror is useless. You must have the wonderful sound of that mirror flopping after each photo....music to my ears.
