These King Kong blooms are on a Pony Tail palm tree I planted in my back yard 21 years ago. At that time, I planted a "pup". The green growth you see on the big bulb at the bottom are pups. This tree now stands at 18 feet tall, not counting the blooms. The blooms are 2 and 1/2 feet long. This is the tallest Pony Tail palm I've ever seen...anywhere.

This tree has bloomed like this only 3 times in all of those years, the first time was 10 years ago, Then it went 7 years before blooming again. This is the third time.

Thanks, Mike.

The first two times it bloomed, it was limited to a single bloom. Then, holy mackerel, it hits me with 4 blooms ( one is not seen in the picture ). It must be a sign to grab some Lotto tickets.

I'm going for the cold beer. Lotto treats me like a stepchild.

These are really interesting, Tom. I have neither seen nor heard of this kind of tree before.

Oddly, John, I rarely see Pony Tail palms...and Florida is probably the palm tree capital of the U.S. The other varieties of palms are just everywhere. Also, to my knowledge, none of the other varieties bloom like this. And, as I mentioned, this one rarely blooms.

Here's another shot of the tree that gives a better overall view of its configuration. The blooms are only a week old and haven't begun to fill out yet.

I hope so. Tony. The blooms are spectacular. The pictures don't do them justice.

Nice set Tom. I don't know anything about palm trees but could these palms be working their way up to an annual bloom?

Hi, Reuss.

That's a very good question. I, too, have wondered if that may be the case. I'm going to question some folks that should be able to shed some light on that issue. I'll let you know what I find out.

See you.
