i have a d80 and five dx lens

i would like to up-grade the camera - i think i have waited long enough for the 300s replacement - not many options for a dx guy - maybe a d7100 or change course and move to fx - at this time i am not sure a mirrorless camera camera is my cup of tea

please share you thinking on this problem of mine

thanks, mr toad

love the looks of the retro - silver df

Well, I can't help much on a comparison to the D80. But I can tell you that I'm a D7100 fan. I recently converted from being a long-time Olympus shooter to Nikon D7100, and have absolutely no regrets. The D7100 has great low-light & high ISO performance and I'm quite happy with the image quality I'm getting.

Likewise, as Frapha stated I too can't help much on the comparison of the D80. However, I just recently jumped into the Nikon D7100 and couldn't be happier. It exceeded my expectation and given the 24 mega pixel, 3.2 inch monitor, 7 fps and one of the best auto focus capabilities in the industry as well as top rated by Consumers Report...this is a great DSLR.

Good friend just made jump from D80 to D7100 and is really happy. I'm going to do the same "soon." But I REALLY I want to see when (not "if") Nikon will be releasing the long promised D400 (he said, dripping with sarcasm.)

The D80 came out around 2006 and was a capable back then. Almost any dslr (even entry level) you buy today will be light years ahead (spec wise) of the D80.

You need to think about which features are most important to you and your approach to photography, and then compare the different models.

I went from the D70 to the D90 and loved the move.
Then I went from the D90 to the D7000 and all that I can say is it is like night and day.

The ISO flexibility is fantastic.the D90 was noise limited to about 640 while the D700 can go past 1600 with ease.

The extra pixels with the D7000 make cropping much more useful.

The images are just that much better with the D7000 and can only be even more so with a D7100.

I have the Nikon D300, I also waited for the replacement. I didn't want to purchase the Nikon D7100 only because, I have so many compact flash cards.
I gave up and bought the Nikon D800. I still use my Nikon D300 when I need great magnification. Such as sport, birds etc.
I use the Nikon D800 for portraits and landscape. The reason I bought the Nikon D800. I have a lot of prime lenses and also some fast Nikon zooms.
The Nikon D7100, I think is the replacement to the Nikon D300s.
Hope this helps

If you are going to full frame, start checking lens prices, as you will need all new lenses.

I went from an older DX to the D 7100. I don't think I could be happier. All the glass that I have gotten used to over the years, still works, ONLY BETTER. Prior to that I had a 'mirrorless' that I liked but I doubt that I ever again opt away from a DSLR.
