Need help with focusing view on Nex 6 with adapted lens

Hello! I'm fairly new to photography and have just one adapted lens (so far). It's a Vivitar 90mm f/1.8 macro. I'm getting some nice shots with it, but focusing is extremely weird. When holding the shutter down halfway, or when pressing the lowest soft key for magnification on manual focusing, I'm seeing tons of noise and a very red/yellow-looking image. Fortunately, when I take the shot the result has good white balance, noise level is fine, etc. For a moment after taking the shot on the preview, I can also see the focus peaking plus the white balance and noise preview all look accurate. Wish it would look even remotely like that when I'm trying to focus and shoot.

Am I doing something wrong? (My bet is 95% that I am.) I have live view on. This is a 37-year-old all-manual macro lens so no electronics possible. I have tried it in manual, shutter priority and aperture priority with the same results. It would be great if I could see what I'm doing...!

Thanks for any pointers!

Well, you are not supposed to push the shutter button halfway while manually focusing. AND, there is no such thing as a 90mm F1.8 macro !

Yes - Vivitar 90mm 1:2.8 1:1 (not f/1.8) Macro Minolta M/SR mount. Old, but nice results. I'm pushing the soft key on the bottom to get the expanded view while in manual (read that online and it does work) however, that isn't what's causing it, I get that weird, dark, reddish extremely noisy view whenever I'm trying to focus on it.

Just did some reshooting and not seeing the problem tonight. Perhaps the fit of the lens and adaptor wasn't just right. Seems acceptable view even with low light - definitely noisy but not so extreme that I can't see what I'm doing. Check out the result I had last night - not bad (for me) with this really old lens!

Is it a Series 1 - or not ....?

I've done some research on it, and I believe it predates series 1, but I really don't know much about these lenses. It was made by Komine, s/n: 28601876, I believe 1976 vintage. It goes to 1:1 natively. I guess it's not as good as the Tokina Vivitar 90mm f/2.5, but it's good for me. Gives me a good step toward something better maybe someday. I'll practice with it this winter and hopefully be ready for insects and flowers this spring.

All the Vivitars are really good - but the Series 1 is thought to be the best - can't remember if made by Tokina or Kiron ! ?

lenses by Komine were/are some of the best made, and are sought after by collectors for a very good reason. I would suggest you try focussing and getting your shutter speed/ aperture right, don't bother with your \soft button\. !

Thanks! I appreciate the advice and encouragement! I'm having fun with the lens. Going south at the end of the month. Maybe I'll find some live bugs and flowers ;)

Better late than never. I'm a week behind on uhh but I hope this will help explain what you are seeing. I have a Sony NEX-3 and it has a feature called Peaking Level and another called Peaking Color. If you have these features you can go to the menu/setup/peaking level and turn it off. That will eliminate this feature and you will no longer see the color "noise" as you described it. You may want to go to your camera's manual or search the internet for a full explanation of the what and how of this focus peaking feature. Best wishes.

Hi - thanks- yes, I did know about peaking and this doesn't look like that. It really looks like general, overall noise but I haven't experienced it as bad as it was the evening that caused me to post to the forum. If I see it that much again, I'll note the circumstances.
