I've turned on my back- button focus on my d3100, now I would like to be able to turn it off, CANT. I have looked in my manual, on-line, you tube, does anyone on here know how to turn it off??

Did you originally set it via custom functions? In my Canon, the way to un-do back button focus was to go to "clear settings" in the menu, then find the choice relating to custom functions.

If you can't get back into the particular menu item you are looking for it is usually because your mode dial is on a setting that does not allow you in to that specific menu item....crank it around till you can access the AF .

According to Magic Lantern Guide for D3100; go to Setup menu, under 'Buttons', turn 'AF-OFF'. I found the Nikon manual supplied doesn't explain clear enough or go deep enough for even a starter DSLR. UHH member recomended the Magic Lantern Guides from Amazon and I'm glad I ordered it. It was half the cover price. Good Luck.

You cannot turn it "off", it has to have a set function, standard is AE-L/AF-L, simply reset that as the designated function and it will no longer work to AF.

Ain't that the truth? Even as a "starter DSLR" a 200 page manual doesn't come close to explaining the 16,000 setting combinations. I usually end up Googling for the specifics.

I would have thought the best way, was to NOT use the button. Leave it alone.

thank you MT ....did what you said and that did work. Thank you, Tom

PS I even went to Nikon's web-site ask them this question and they could not even answer it.

Look under your cameras custom functions. One of them allows you to change what your shutter button does. You probably have it set to metering, or metering only. Change it to metering/focus.

I shoot Canon but it seems to me when I helped a Nikon shooter set up his camera he had this function and he had to change it to metering only to make BBF work.

Can I make a suggestion? Put a piece of paper in your manual and any time you make a change on one of your settings make a note of it. Then if you need to make a change you can look and see what you need to do.
