If you recall , last week I won a bid on ebay for a Canon 100-400 and just didn't like it, not to mention it had a rattling on the inside so I sent it back. Well on xmas eve, I recieived the replacment L 300mm f4 and wow, what a lens. Such a better , sharper lens then the 100-400. Sorting photos and will post a few in the next day or two. I am sure I will have a few questions but for now I just want to get to know it and go from there.

Way cool! Take your time and get to know it, remember you have about 12X-13X magnification, and it'll need to have a high shutter speed and/or mega-stability for best results.
You must be quite the happy camper!

You made both an excellent and a smart choice!
The Canon 300 f4 L is a fantastic lens that will provide a sharp detailed image!
Ive never been a huge fan of the 100-400 zoom and if you want to get a bit more reach and have some real fun with your 300 put on a Canon 1.4 extender which will make it a 420 5.6.
You will still get a nice sharp image and quick AF using the extender!
Have fun and enjoy!

I glad to hear that about the 100-400mm. It was on my wish list. I've did not realize that the quaility of the pictures were poor on it.
Would you tell me how much you paid for the the 300mm lens? Also, what is it's full range.

Rache, the 1-4 is in nearly every Canon wildlife/bird photographer's bag. It's been around for about 20 years, and is a workhorse. It sounds like the OP got a used one that may have been banged around a bit, as they don't normally sound like a pair of maracas when you shake them. That said, a 300mm f/4 PRIME is almost always gonna produce a sharper shot than a big ol' superzoom like the 1-4. I think Gessman here has the 400mm big brother and he goes orgasmic when he uses it...

Here's a shot at 400mm of a flag about 200 feet from where I stood. Handheld. First day I had the lens.

thanks Jim, thats good to know. Maybe I'll just stick with the 300mm. The 100-400mm may be just to big of a truck to carry around and I don't usually go after birds. But, that said maybe one day I will. I'm still trying to get a great shot of an Egret. Darn bird always sits there when my big SUV drives by it, but when I try and point a little black camera with a big lens at it......well it alway flies away. C'est la vie.

I spent a few hours hiking my favorite trail today and learned a few things. One, it gets rather heavy lugging this lens around all day. I use a cross shoulder strap and have the lens connected to a mono pod. I keep one hand on the mono to take some of the weight off my shoulder and to keep the camera from bouncing. Still it gets old lugging around. 2nd, I found having only the 300mm with me all day that I seemed to miss a few shots. At times on a open meadows with a wonderful sky full of clouds I found myself wanting a wide angle lens. I like being forced to get creative, but this will take some getting used to. Pictures soon.

let me add that I can't say that the 100-400 is a bad lens. I am sure it is great. It just didn't work for me. I only had a 7day return policy so I didn't get the chance to really check it out, but running in through the norms for me , it just didn't fit into my style. Add to that , it had parts making noise on the inside. I would suggest if you can try before you buy would be a great idea. I don't have the ability to do that where i live so..... It was heavy and bulky. This 300 doesn't seem to be, but I think its near the same. I will use it in the canoe often so it has to work for me. Looks like I will need to get a larger waterproof Pelican Box as it wont fit in the one I use now. grrrrr.

I have the 1-4 zoom and love it. The pictures I have taken are sharp and crisp. I don't love the push pull zoom but being that there is no choice for this lense have learned to live with it. Have taken many nature photos and have used it for taking photos of my Grandson during football games with incredible results. Mine is as smooth as the day I bought it and can only surmise that the one you tried was defective.

I shoot the nature shots either hand held or with a mono pod and have not found it to be too heavy. I highly recommend this lense to anyone reading this. Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to sharing any of my photos yet but will do so as soon as I find time and will definitely note the photos taken with this lense.

I have the Canon L 100-400 and I love this lens. Used it mostly for football photos and wildlife. I will post one soon.

I was quite disappointed when I first got my 100-400. Bought it to shoot birds on the beach and then found out I couldn't walk on water. I now use it mostly to shoot people and am much happier with the results.

hard to compare a 100-400 with a 400 prime, the dollar difference should tell you that.

For you birders out there, attached an image I took yesterday with Sigma 300mm F4 APO tele macro wide open and Tamron 2X on tripod. This lens is long discontinued but has been rumored to be as good as the Canon L - I agree ! Due to chip incompatibility with late Canon bodies, I cannot stop the aperture down from F4 - so I shoot it wide open all the time - which is what I want to do anyway !
