Okay fellow camera fans, I am in the process of being converted to the dark side. (Digital SLR, only kidding about the "dark side").) No I still will not part with my 35mm SLRs as they have been my whole life.

Anyway, looking for feed back and experiences for a flash (strobe) for my Nikon D3200. Looking for one that will give me further reach than the built in pop up device on this camera.

Nikon is known for their creative lighting system so buy a Nikon flash. Buying the best is never a mistake,

That flash costs as much as the camera. The SB700 or even the new SB500 would most likely do.

Yes it does cost a bit more...but I'll bet the OP outgrows the camera way before the flash...or bye then flash's...lol
Welcome to the wonderful world of flash photography.

A friend bought a lesser expensive Nikon flash and after a few months bought the more expensive flash.

Been down that road as well in my early 35mm days.... Live and learn to find the right balance of price and performance.

I'm partial to Metz flashes. If you're in the US, here is what's available from B&H:

The 52 AF-1 is a good buy for 229 USD.

Welcome to the Force...

You have entered an addictive land of truths, myths, fantasies, ghosts, goblins and good old fashioned advice (whether you want it or not)...

Seriously though - the folks here have lots of good advice and a couple of days of experience and are willing share what they can - don't hesitate to ask detailed questions, in fact, the more details, the more accurate the answer ;)

A couple of links to help you
navigate the forum and a couple of resources to hopefully answer your questions or guide you in your quest...

Looking forward to seeing some photos.

UPDATE: Updated the "navigate" link -

A lot of people like the Yongnuo speedlites. You can get them on Amazon for about $70. I wouldn't go that direction if you're a working pro, but at that price, it gives you chance to learn, and even pick up 2, 3, or 4 for the price of one big name speedlite.

I'm about to press the order button on at least 1 to try out.

Welcome to the forum!

If you want to stay with Nikon, then the SB-910 would likely be the top performer. If you want to save a little money and still have a Nikon CLS Commander flash (since your camera's pop up does not have 'CMD' mode) then the Nikon SB-700 would be a good choice.

If you want to save even more money, you can go with other companies, such as Nissin, Metz, or Yongnuo. I have the Nikon SB-700, and it is an excellent flash. But the ones I reach for over and over are the inexpensive Yongnuos. I almost always use them off camera w/radio wireless control. For the cost conscious enthusiast, I usually recommend the yn-568ex or yn-565ex along with Yongnuo's best radio transceivers.

I have a metz 58, And I never regret getting(buying,) QUALITY. But I never pay top dollar just to get a BIG name brand either. You are RIGHT in asking for opinions of Knowledgeable folks, and ask friends you know as well. Never hurts to hear many options. In the end, then, you make a semi-informed decision. UGG is a great place for opinions, and that's just"my opinion". Happy new year.. RJM

Whatever you do, when it arrives, don't use it in the dark while your tongue is wet. If you do, it will multiply faster than a mogwai, and you'll have little Yongnuo flashes and trigger/receivers all over the house. It happened at my house.
