I am looking to buy a tripod, not CF, as they are not in my budget. I am 6' and would like to know when they list max. height is that with center column extended? I was looking at the Induro 8M AT-213. I have a ball head that is 3 1/2' high. My camera for now is the Panasonic FZ200 and am looking at the Nikon D5500 or the D7100. Not sure about getting one of these cameras.
Thanks
Ron

The specs (on the B&H site) show 56.7" (144cm) without the column extended.

If the tripod has a center column, the listed height is almost always with the column extended. If you are doing birds in flight or in trees, or you are doing airshows, the tripod needs to go over your head.

Ron; for your budget, I would recommend the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021. You can find these on ebay for around $100. I am 6' and can look into the view finder of camera without the center column raised. This is a sturdy aluminum tripod and I have mounted my D3 and 300 prime on here with no problems. It is a little heavier than a carbon fiber, but at that price, hard to beat. Manfrotto also has a newer one of these and you can find them on B&H as well as other top quality camera stores. Hope this helps.

Should have looked at the specs. That would have answered my question.
Thanks

Just took a quick look. Very reasonable. It's only listed to hold about 1/2 the weight of the Induro and needs the center column to reach my 6' height. Also a bit heavier.

I shoot mostly from a stool or mobility scooter. if your style of shooting doesn't call for you to be standing all the time, then a standard height tripod may suffice. another advantage to seated shooting is not having to fully extend the legs adding to stability.

I'm 6'2" and I have a Dolica AX730P105 73-Inch Proline Tripod it comes with Pan Head but I took it off and put on a ball head and it puts the camera base at 61 inches with the center column all the way down. With just less than three inches extended on the center column it puts the view finder at eye level. So just for reference, with Canon 50D view finder at eye level it is at 67 inches and the base of the camera is at 63.5 inches. So a tripod that extends to 65 to 68 inches should do but I think the less center column extension the better. I'm not sure but I think I paid about $60 for this tripod. It is well made smooth and inexpensive. The pan head that come with it is pretty nice although I don't use it.

One minor add. I shot on steeply sloped ground. I use my "tallest" tripod and extend the down slope legs out further. Thus I use a tripod that extends to 69". Slopes and birds are where I use the full height. I am 6 feet.

I have a cheep tripod, about $32. Now with a pan head that cannot be removed. The pan head stinks. When I tighten it in place it moves quite a bit. I was looking for something better. I purchased a ball head and now am looking for a bit better quality. I got this when I first started shooting again a few years ago and didn't think about not raising the center column if possible. So now I am looking for another without any head. Thanks for your info as I will check it out.
Regards,
Ron

I've got this tripod, just don't use it as much as I probably should. The leg's extend so you could set this up anywhere. I don't care for the center post at all, on any tripod. My Bogen I could park a car on and it would hold it up, Very strong and not to heavy to carry around. If I was to buy a new one now, I'd beware of getting one to ligh or one not ratee for a heavier camera. My Bogen with my RB on it sits there like a rock wall!

If I use a tripod once every 3-4 months that's allot. I have been looking for 20 pounds plus rated capacity. Height is my issue. If I have to bend over a little that should be okay. Going to be 70 next year so the easier the better. The weight of the tripod is not much of an issue but I would like to keep it under 5 lbs.
I will look more into a Bogen. Thanks for your response.
