When clicking on LR6 and I'm getting "Unexpected error opening catalog". I've restarted, run scans, etc. and can't get into it. I'm using windows 7 Prof. I bought it, LR6, Jan. 16th and haven't had any problems till now. Any one have this problem in the past? :?: :?:

Try opening LR with the Ctrl key down, which should allow you to start with a new empty catalog. If that doesn't work, then try running LR as Administrator.

I did the "Administrator" part and didn't work. Did the ctr key and that didn't work. I'm going to try the web site you indicated and see what happens. Thanks Gene51

Open your backup catalog, everybody should have one Adobe prompts you to save a backup when you exit, so open that one. If you save it often you should have many backups. Mine for instance is backup up every time on exit, and a Hazel rule removes backup catalogs older than one month.

Your backup is usually stored in a Backup folder in the same folder where LR is. I'm not a Windows guy. I'd create another folder called BadCat and MOVE your current corrupted catalog there.

Now locate your backup folder and COPY a backup catalog to the place where your original catalog was stored and rename it to whatever you want.

All catalogs end with .lrcat. Double click on the catalog file you just copied from backups and see if it opens. If not rinse & repeat with an older backup until you find one that will open. If you get this dialog box when you exit LR, you have backups somewhere assuming you don't hit the "SKIP" button. You just need to search your computer for .lrcat files. If you for some reason turned off backups in preferences, then you just learned the hard way about backups.

There are several possibilities as to what the problem might be which may include a HDD error but try this first, rename your main catalog by adding a "-1" at the end (example: mycatalog.lrcat changes to mycatalog-1.lrcat) and then try and open LR. Because it is looking for and can't find your original catalog it will ask you what catalog to open or create a new one. Try to create a new catalog and see if that allows LR to open. If that fails and neither of the previous methods work then the problem must be in the program itself. Have you tried reinstalling the program? Try installing right over top of the original and if that doesn't work then uninstall the original, reboot, followed by a fresh install.

If that doesn't work, run an "error-checking" on the drive as the drive may have a bad sector.

This should be a last ditch effort. Open a backup catalog first. If that does not work, no need to rename things, simply hold the Alt/Opt key while opening LR and select new catalog.

I have never seen this on screen... Mine will come up and say that it is due to backup, since it has been a week since the last one. I have often felt that I would like it backed up more often, but cannot find anywhere in the menus that deals with backup frequency. Can you tell me how to get to this? Thank you!

On a MAC it's in Catalog settings.

Thanks! It's the same on the PC, but of course it looks different. That was just what I was looking for...
