Greetings from E TX! I am a 71 yr old Grandma taking a beginning photography class at a community college! An older lady. Wanting to move from p&s to better pix to share with my grandchildren! Searching for a camera that is lightweight and easy to carry, but higher quality and affordable for a retired teacher. Appreciate constructive suggestions and good humor. Looking forward to absorbing some of the wisdom and experience found on this forum. :)

If you don't need weather sealing, the Olympus E-M10 MrII is a very good buy. If you want weather sealing, then I would suggest the Olympus E-M5 or E-M5 MrII either new or refurbished. If you look in on this site from time to time, you will find that the image quality and color is very good straight out of the camera. They are smaller and lighter that the APS-C and full frame mirrorless and less costly.

And I forgot to mention Panasonic. They also put out a great camera and they have a slight edge over Olympus with the video side of imaging.

One very affordable camera is a refurb. Canon SX50. (Although some might consider this a P&S) It's now listed on Canon's website. You can't go wrong with the previous suggestions, for sure.
Welcome to the Hog.

Welcome. Look at SONY A6000. Price should be dropping as the A6300 is coming out in March.

You have to go to a store and get the feel of the camera in your hands. Do you want to change lenses. I used a Panasonic LX in France years ago. Great little camera. Can't change lenses.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/880960-REG/Panasonic_dmc_lx7k_Lumix_LX7_Digital_Camera.html
Also do you want to shoot sports?Grands play basketball or soccer? That's important when considering which camera to buy.

If you check with Canon, they might still have some refurbished SX-50's for sale. Excellent all 'round camera and their price has been approx. $150.00 (It sold for $399.99 originally).

Welcome to UHH. If you have your heart set on mirror less, go for it. If not, there are a number of light weight DSLR's and advanced point and shoot cameras available that won't break the budget and should serve you well for a long time. You can save some money also by looking at refurbished equipment, which is like new in most cases, or well cared for used equipment. I have had excellent experience finding what I needed at Adorama, B&H, and Cameta Camera. Good luck in your search.
