Hi all , this my be a bit early to ask but canon is releasing a new wifi card for three cameras .I bought the 7d m2 within a week of its release and wanted to get wifi card but since it has a magnesium body they really didn't work.just wondering if the new card will work as advertised and if so does anyone know what the difference is to accomplish it.
Now a second question, since my camera still has the first firmware I never upgraded to 1.04 because the only fix for me is the 16-35 2.8 lens which I did a micro adj which solve that focus issue. but now with the new wifi card I read a firmware upgrade may be necessary just wondering did anyone know if it would be 1.04 or Will canon release a new version I know this is early for asking so forgive me.
I also heard some people had lockup problems when they did firmware upgrades should I be concerned with this ? Thanks everyone bill

Why do you need a card like this? Just seems like more stuff to go wrong. Why not wait until you get home and download them via a card reader. I can't see where somebody needs to see a pic that fast.

Nor does one "NEED" an automatic garage door opener, but sure is nice to have! While you may not have a need, many others do. For me, it is so my pics of the grandkids, etc. go directly to my wife's tablet so she can view real time rather than waiting for me to get around to post processing, which sometimes can take a while.

wer224, I also have the 7DII and had no issues with the firmware upgrade. Regarding the wifi card, I have the Mobi Pro card and have no issues with the magnesium body. I remember reading about this before I bought my card, and honestly, I think people who were having issues for one reason or another just blamed it on the body build. I believe it to be a non-issue, as does Canon as they are now coming out with an equivalent card.

My two cents worth, keep the change!

Sometimes you're clients would like to see things that you're discussing right away and the more toys the better 😁

From what I read the Canon wifi card will also allow camera control; EyeFi doesn't.

The new firmware will have a different number. I have updated several cameras (no 7Ds); never had a problem. Just follow instructions carefully.

The Wi-Fi SD card W-E1 does work with the 7DII, according to Canon:
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/wireless-file-transmitter/wi-fi-adapter-w-e1/wi-fi-adapter-w-e1
The current firmware update for the 7DII is 1.0.5, not 1.0.4. I updated last Sept when it came out and have had no problems.

As LFingar pointed out, the soon to be available Canon W-E1 WiFi card will probably serve your needs. It was specifically designed for use with this and other recent Canon cameras, like the 5D III, with two card slots. The current firmware for the 7D Mark II is 1.0.5. According to the current rumors the firmware upgrade to support this card will be 1.1.0, rather than 1.0.6 probably because it will add the new functionality to support the WiFi card rather than just address bugs.

Thanks for the replys. I tell you for me I cannot wait to get it. How many times at bd party's, graduations, anniversaries, etc etc. I take pretty good pics and with the abundance of cell phone snapping pics and posting them on social media as it happens makes me thinking its not necessary for me to take my heavy camera ! well that wouldn't happen I'll always have it. Even everyday pics with grandkids my daughter's snapping away with her phone and posting while I have pics in my camera and really can't do anything with them at the time .hope everyone gets my point. Can't wait for the release thanks again

(Sadly) the W-E1 is specifically for the 7D2 and 5DS and r only - no other bodies like the 7D or 5D3.

I thought it would also be available for the 5D3. Perhaps I was wrong.

Toshiba makes a Wi-Fi card that works for any camera with an SD card slot. It’s called Flash Air:
https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-FlashAir-Wireless-Memory-PFW032U-1CCW/dp/B00UOYPZP2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472326676&sr=8-1&keywords=toshiba+sd+card+wifi

Once you download the free software, you can view photos from your camera on any android or ios device. There are some steps you have to go through to establish a connection, but once done it work’s well. The thing that it doesn’t do is give you the ability to control the camera from your device.

This is 2016. WiFi is now the norm, not an exception. Most new cameras come with WiFi built in. Just because you and I may not use it, does not mean its not intensely popular.

You really should upgrade to the latest firmware. It is a lot more than just improving the camera's performance with one lens. Very often there other fixes in firmware that aren't described. So it's generally good to keep reasonably up to date (Note: I don't install it the day it's announced.... Instead I wait a month or two to see if there are any problems with the latest release. I don't want to be a "beta tester". Let other folks do that! It's rare, but occasionally firmware releases have been problematic and short-lived. You do not have to do a progressive upgrade, just install the latest as long as it's a couple months old and has been proven.)

Firmware upgrades are easy and the WiFi card is not necessary to do it. You can use any Compact Flash or SD memory card. It must be formatted in-camera first, though, so be sure to remove any images from the card first.

To do an update is easy. In addition to prepping the memory card, also be sure your camera battery is charged up. You just don't want it to run out of power and accidentally shut down during the firmware installation. You also have to be careful not to touch any buttons and don't turn off the camera during the installation. Interrupting the installation is where people get in trouble and "brick" their cameras. But if you are reasonably careful about this, the rest of the process is pretty automatic.

Download the firmware update onto your computer and "unpack it". Check that the size of the "FIR" file is correct (that it matches the size specified on the Canon website). You can then either load that FIR file onto the pre-formatted memory card, or connect your camera to your computer with the USB cord that came with the camera. Navigate in the camera's menu to where the firmware version is shown and click on it... You'll be asked if you want to update it.... say yes and it will look for it on your memory card. If you left the file on your computer instead, I think you need to use Canon EOS Utility software to install it, instead of the camera's menu. But it's basically the same thing.

It takes a few minutes to install and the progress is shown on your computer. There are more detailed instructions for the upgrade on the Canon website, under the support/download/firmware tab for your particular camera. I think you'll find different versions for Mac or PC users, as well needing to specify your computer's operating system.

And, as I understand it the new WiFi adapter that Canon is offering for the 7DII will give a working range of about 30 feet, which actually is about the same as most cameras with built-in WiFi. This is probably most useful for remote control of the camera using a smartphone or tablet. It may not be fast enough or have enough range to be practical for image transfers. (Note: Canon offers a more powerful WFT or "Wireless File Transfer" module for that purpose, good up to 400 feet. Those are pricey, though. There also are less expensive third party devices that do similar, such as Camranger. Those typically have a range of about 150 feet. All these also have ability to remotely control the camera.) I will probably eventually get the WiFi adapter for my 7DIIs... but am not in a rush. Heck, I'm still using a "dumb phone" and don't own a tablet computer... I have occasionally done computer-tethered shooting though, but for that would need the more powerful modules.
