Most (not all) school gyms are terrible. You need the fastest lens you can afford and the highest ISO you can shoot and still retain quality. So any f2.8 or faster. Depending on how close you can get, the 50mm f1.8 can be perfect.
To get a shutter speed of at least 1/250 and preferably 1/500 you will need that fast lens and an ISO up around 1600 or more.
If the gym is newer with better lighting, you MIGHT be able to get away with an ISO of 800.
If you have one of those f4.0-5.6 variable aperture lenses, you may find that you just leave the camera home and enjoy the event.

Well put, Captain. Last night I went to a theater and had to shoot in VERY low light. I used 6400 ISO and my trusty 50mm F1.8 and got very decent results. Some of the shots were at 1/10 or 1/5 sec so I had to have a very steady hand.
The F2.8 lens I had was simply too slow.

I learned a lesson this weekend while shooting a graduation indoors with not so great light. I shot at high ISO, but it wasn't good enough.
It was suggested that I rent a faster lens, rather than shell out serious cash.
That was great advice and I'll use it next time....but, you might want to consider it if it's a one time thing.

I just bought a 50mm f1.8 prime lens for my Nikon D5100 for that very purpose.It is autofocus and was $220.
I used it to take some action shots at a basket ball game in the darkest ambient conditions I have ever seen.
Attached are a couple of example taken at f1.8, 1/750s and ISO 6400. The D5100 sensor is reported to have low noise at the higher ISO settings

I find if I shoot RAW, then I can underexpose 2 stops and recover that in Lightroom. This allows me to shoot at lower ISO than would otherwise be needed to get the shot.
Doing indoor house concerts at very low light is a challenge, plus forget white balance, all the lights are red or blue or green. Makes for interesting lighting.
I usually shoot shutter priority, and set my SS at 1/60 to 1/125 (for action sports you will need faster SS) and use either an f/2.8 or 1.8 lens. DOF is very shallow so accurate focus is a must. The camera will complain there is not enough light, but with Lightroom and RAW it is an easy fix to bring the light back up.

I just got my 50mm 1.8 last week. I couldn't sleep last night so i headed outside at around 5:30 to 6:00 this morning to catch some early morning shoots. I was amazed at how sharp and clear my shots were.

The captn is right; fast is good.
I've used (to great success) the Canon 85mm f/1.8. It's inexpensive, has a reasonably long reach and it's fast.
Here is a representative shot taken in a gym with horrible lighting.
This was shot at 1/125, ISO 800, f/2 or so.

:thumbup: thank you all ,great pictures from everybody,the 50 prime i have well work good,liked the 85mm f1.8 lookslike a keeper. :) need a new camera i have only a canon xs,looking at canon 60 d or waiting for what the new canon t4i .What camera is better then ill get one of them. The canon 70-200 f 2.8 cost a lot of money but renting is agood idea. :thumbup:

Hi, I use the 70-200 2.8 w/o IS a and it works on all the 50 or so gyms I've used it in so far. I also use a monopod that helps with some of the shots I take. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike
