I bought a new obsidian stage for getting reflections of small subjects. We had miserable conditions yesterday, but I managed one nice shot of a Hopkin's Rose nudibranch.

A small reef off Palos Verdes, California. Visibility was less than a few feet and the surge was spraying sand everywhere. I was really happy to come away with any photos.

I love your idea of a piece of obsidian for a smooth black surface. I have to hand it to you for diving in that kind of viz.
