I’m amazed that smaller birds can become instantly airborne.

Even larger birds can do that. It is because their wings are like a helicopter rotary wing, they move to produce their own lift. They don't need speed to get lift like a plane's fixed wings. Heavy flying birds only need a couple of steps to jump up so their wings don't hit the ground as they take off.

I'm not even a small bird, and it amazes me how I can become instantly airborne these days - if I'm not careful enough A beautiful capture
