I am a retired military man. I was visiting a few cemeteries in Belgium and Luxembourg to pay my respects to those who had fallen. I came across this headstone and almost passed it by until I noticed the children's toys at the base. It was only then that I realized this young man was 15 yrs old when he died in the war -- a boy among men who gave their all.
It's always shocking to me to see how young men - boys, actually - lie to go to war. I understand the patriotism that drives them to it. But I do wish they'd grow up a bit before acting on it.
He should have never been there. If the army needed him so bad they could have found a job for him stateside. Even though it's over a 100 years in the past it makes me angry. Boys that young should never have been allowed to fight.
