I just freed myself from a weekend of angst after discovering that I had to delete “LrCat.lock” from backups in order to be able to access all my folders. My question is how do I prevent the lock up from happening again? I don’t believe that I did anything out of the ordinary to warrant the lockup. Judging by the comments on this topic on the Adobe web site, this appears to be a common problem. Thanks in advance for the info.
If you don't exit LR in the normal style/method then the ".lock" file isn't deleted by LR so you will have to delete it manually.
The normal style/method will depend on what platform you use - PC or MAC...
Crashing the computer, or randomly cutting the power to the computer, even an unplanned reboot, all with LR Classic open will likely leave the 'lock' file behind. You mention a backup, where if you're just copying files from source (a) to backup (b) with LR Classic open / active on the source computer, this would get the lock file copied into the backup too.
So, consider your backup copy process and / or your LR Classic shutdown procedure. Also, if you leave LR Classic open when you finish your work for the day, consider instead closing the software on your computer when you know you're done, so no unexpected power issues occur.
Ah Ha! I think I had a rainbow swirly ball when I was in Lr where the computer/program was not responding and either escaped or command optioned out. This is very helpful! Thank you for taking the time to explain.
