Well, after experimenting, I'll say: NO.
I used an old slide that was full of dust and with small scratches as a test.
The result? There is no need to use those complicated edits.
The process is simple to test and verify.
Open a capture, a scan, whatever that needs help.
Duplicate that layer twice. You may not even to do that if you create a layer out of your edit... (Select all layers and press Ctrl-E)
On the last copy, use a Gaussian or a surface filter.
Set the blend mode to color.
Create an empty layer.
Select the remove tool, adjust the size, sample all layers and have at it.
That's it.
Another to go in my Tutorial file. Thanks... time to unload the Kodak Carousel.
