If you haven't watched "The Thin Man" series of movies from the 1930s and '40s, you're missing out on some good entertainment. They star William Powell and Myrna Loy, and they show a good representation of that time period. You can find them on YouTube with few, if any, commercials.

They made six of them. I have the DVDs. I think the best one was "The Thin Man Goes Home"

Loved those films and adored Myrna Loy, the spunkiest actress ever.

She played the mother in "Cheaper by the Dozen," 1952?

They starred in at least one other film together: Manhattan Melodrama. They were also in The Great Ziegfield together. My wife and I watch the Thin Man series every New Years. I just saw "Dancer," from one of those films in "His Brother's Wife," with Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck.

When they find a good pairing, they stick with it. I think Bing Crosby was paired with Jean Arthur in several films.

I think the original was by far the best. The "Thin Man" of the title was in fact the murder victim, but the term came to be applied to William Powell. The later films, especially when the baby came, were less sophisticated and relied on site gags too much.

Have you looked up the definition for "over-emoting?"

Correct! Wasn't there a TV series with the same name?

Ah, yes! Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk - with a dog.

Jerry, I do have to question, though, just how representational it was of the time period. Or was it a representation of just one area? It seemed to be a little too boozy and criminal laden. Late thirties most of the country was suffering and working through the Depression. I think this provided a little light entertainment. Same as we got into the early 40's when we were at war.

The cars, clothing, and behavior were typical. Activity in Manhattan might possibly be different from activity in Kansas. These seem to take place in NY and CA. One episode had them on Long Island, not far from where I used to live.

As I recall, the dog was named Asta. The show was pretty good for its time. Of course, I was already a fan of the movies.

Correct. There was something on TV that was a take-off on the Thin Man - similar names and appearances, even the dog. I wonder how many caught the reference to films that were eighty years old.
