The Blue Egg

I found this bird egg in my back yard a few days ago. A couple of days later I found another one only broken. It look as if some bird won't have two little ones to raise. No nests in the area I can see.

It measures approximately an inch long and 3/4 inch tall at its widest part. Does anyone have any idea what type of bird it may belong to?

Perhaps a Robin's egg.

Thank you very much kpmac. I thought so at first and actually did look up bird eggs. The site I checked showed all sort of different colors with some of the eggs spotted. Under Robin eggs it showed some as spotted so I thought probably not a Robin egg. That brings me to right now and your post. I looked up Robin egg specifically and there was almost the same exact photo I submitted a few minutes ago. You are correct. I had not thought to enter Robin egg specifically. These computers are so wonderful if only we mere mortals know what to enter into them for information.

Yep, probably a Robin! My puppy found one on this morning's walk. She ate it!

Thank you very much Chief. I did consider for a nano-second scrambling this egg into an omelet but didn't think it would fill me up. Of course it would have to be after I got a photograph. Your puppy probably had the right idea.

Thank you very much dpullum for a very advanced scientific explanation of what I found and did with it.

Robin eggs that I see are sky blue. But I don't know if there is variation.
As for the lack of a nest, there is egg robbery where a bigger bird (like a crow) will carry off an egg, but it can be hounded into dropping it by the parents.

Thank you very much Mark. I appreciate the information. One source I checked showed nothing about this being a robin egg. But then I checked another site and it said it was definitely a robin egg. It also pointed out as you did about other birds carrying off eggs and/or the mother getting rid of it if she suspects the egg is not going to hatch, no idea how she might know except mothers of course know EVERYTHING.
