I have been exploring using my D850 for video. I would like to be able to edit the short videos. Mainly doing open mic music performances. Looking for suggestion on what software is good and reliable and easy on the wallet. Suggestions anyone? Thank you

Bob

Davinci Resolve is excellent. And free.

Free with Windows is now "ClipChamp". Free with Mac is iMovie

Top end ($$) is Adobe Premiere Pro and the "studio" version of Black Magic's Davinci Resolve.

Blackmagic has a scaled back version of Davinci Resolve that you can use for free. Be prepared for a learning curve.

In between you have long popular and effective editors like Adobe Premiere Elements and Cyberlink Power Director.

CapCut is a more recent choice. Owned by the parent of TikTok, it has become popular. There are free and improved for money versions.

All of them are good. The best thing is to pick one, stay focused and learn it. There is no "best".

If a Mac user, iMovie is free on your computer. Not the best, but can do most things.

Davinci Resolve. The free version will do everything you need.

All are going to require a learning curve.

If you have a Mac, the absolute no-brainer is iMovie. But Black Magic Designs' DaVinci Resolve has a free version that is both far more advanced and far more complex. Resolve comes in both Mac and Windows versions.

The learning curve can be pretty flat if you focus on the essentials in any NLE.

I taught a class in my retirement community last year. First we learned the common workflow and some terminology. With that, my 'students' could put together a basic video in DaVinci Resolve after watching a focused 15 minute YT video.

I'm for Premiere Elements; I can edit frame by frame, getting my short clips exactly the way I want them. Good price, too, and plenty of video tutorials to learn from.

While I don't do all that much video work, when I do I've been using 'OpenShot Video Editor' from OpenShot Studios, LLC, on my MacBook M1 Pro. For more information about OpenShot, go to: https://www.openshot.org/company/

And, as a bonus you get my personal attention! I've been checking the Adobe Premiere Elements forum about twice a day for years. There are four other regulars. We team up to make sure the questions get answered quickly.

Access to the forum is in the Premiere Elements Help menu.

Yet another reason why I think so highly of UHH and all the folks in it...
