All your camera equipment has been destroyed in a flood and your insurance doesn't cover "acts of God".
Casper the Friendly Ghost offers you two options:

1. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $7,000 and one lens not to exceed $2500
or;
2. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $2500 and one lens not to exceed $7000.

No dodging around here, Casper is only offering two choices

It's the LENS.
Sony a9 with a 200-600 lens. It is the sharpest short throw telephoto on the market today. The only lens that comes close is the Canon 100-400 II and the new 100-500.

#2 regardless how you scale the costs. Bought my first lens that cost more than the camera and what an improvement at least for birds and wildlife.

????? REALLY?????
Canon has always recognized the importance of the lens!!! They are locking down the mirrorless market not because they came out with the most awesome mirrorless camera! They recognized the need to provide the most awesome mirrorless lenses first! Canon bodies have always been designed to provide specialized user needs when combined with the range of totally awesome lenses! Canon users can depend on Canon to provide the lens/body combo that will get the job done. Their motto seems to be "Make awesome flexible lenses and we can build a body for what is needed" They lock in great lenses then adapt camera design to specific uses. Not the other way around. But it only works because they produce the best lenses! Nikon is failing because they focused on camera body do-dahs and woo-hoos before lenses. Sony is now catching on, but Nikon not so much.

...While OK lenses can be gotten for considerably less and in some cases provide excellent image quality, there really is no substitute for an 400mm F2.8 or a 500mm or 600mm F4. Anyone who thinks otherwise has never shot with a really good lens, and cannot fully lappreciate the compromises involved in using lower quality "value priced" lenses.

👍👍 Exactly what I as going to add.

Can you elaborate on your idea of 3 different cameras. I primarily use my 1Dx MkII but only consider it one camera or more appropriately camera body...

Photography equipment companies make many different camera bodies but many more different lenses. So far the camera cos. are not agreeing with the folks answering your survey. Canon realizes the value of the camera is more critical than the lens and build their cameras accordingly. When I am carrying my 1 DX I am actually carrying three different cameras. Whatever lens I chose places its characteristics on each of those cameras, not vice versa. Your survey helps explain why most people do not understand the concept of "upgrade" when camera bodies are the subject. Features of cameras are far more critical to the image captured than are the features of lenses.

Lens first and then a food enough body to utilize what the lens can do. Any relatively current body is probably good enough...the AF algorithms and noise keep getting better. I’m astounded by how good the AF is I. My wife’s new Z50...easily as good as my D7500...and I inherited her old D7100 as my second body...and it’s AF is clearly inferior to both, not to mention the lower frame rate.

While a good body is crucial it gets obsoleted quickly. On the other hand good glass is a better investment and store of value akin to a precious commodity.

Well I understand that lockdown has affected the mental acuity of some. Hopefully you are not one.

BTW, As soon as someone sticks the word "or" in a question, a false equivalence is usually a fact.
