Anyone use Insteon smarthome devices?

If you use Insteon smarthome products you know they went bellyup overnight leaving users without access. While the devices still work locally, access via Alexa is gone.

Are you moving to other brands or have you a solution to control the devices with an app without using Insteon's hub?

Right now there are a multitude of opinions floating on reddit's site: r/insteon. As an experiment I recently added some Leviton Caseta devices, but it too uses a hub that must periodically connect to the web for time updates and setup.

I used to us Insteon and liked it, but for the past few years I have been using Philips Hue bulbs and outlet controllers and find them to be rock solid, and offer more than Insteon.

I can only guess you are talking about voice command light switches and appliances. My home is a bit too old to have been wired for smart technology, 1988. Our Alexa devices are for entertainment and information use only and info via our WiFi home network. I know a friend with a new Smart House, I'll ask them if they have noticed a problem.

Not really, I find the Philips Hue app better and your house doesn't need to be wired specially for the Hue lamps. They work with a small hub and that is all you need beyond the lamps and outlets. https://www.philips-hue.com/en-us

Gave it up years ago. Now use Control4 through a local dealer. Very reliable. Not cheap…

I'm a DIY type person and Control4 is out of my price range for sure.

Good products but the product line is not extensive enough for my needs.

I knew that insteon had spread themselves too thin several years ago. They had to back out, downsize, and regroup. Guess they needed new management.

They brought in a new guy a while back who made great overtures of things to come and what was to come folded.

Home Assistant is probably the most popular upgrade path—it's an open source home server that you control, so nothing like this can happen to you ever again. OpenHab is another open source option with Insteon support, and a Homebridge plugin can get Insteon working with Apple's HomeKit.

Home assistant warns: “ The Insteon company has shut down and turned off their cloud as of April 2022. Do not factory reset your device under any circumstances as it will not be recoverable.”

My son uses ZWave and voice controls everything via Alexa, but I’m old school and just use X10 for light and device control from a timer/controller - no voice activation, and uses power line instead of RF/WiFi.

I use a lot of Insteon devices but also use a Universal Devices ISY994 controller which is programmable and does a nice job. I tried Zwave once but didn't like it at all. Will probably stick with the Insteon I have for the foreseeable future.

However, the ISY994 requires an Insteon PLM so that may not be a solution. Universal Devices is trying to source the PLMs.
