As I've mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of passwords, especially to get onto a computer. My Acer laptop sometimes asks for a password, and sometimes it doesn't. It will go right to the desktop. Starting it yesterday, I had to enter the P/W. When a Windows update was due, I selected Restart, and it didn't ask for a password. Looking online, it seems that Windows may or may not require a password after a restart from an update. I'll have to delete the P/W requirement on the laptop altogether.
Why would the Acer sometimes start without asking for a password?

Not necessarily restricted to Acer.
Our Windows computers turn on the screen saver after X minutes.
After Y minutes the computer is locked.
If I wiggle the mouse before Y minutes are up, it does not ask for a PW.
After Y minutes it asks for a PW.
Two weeks ago, not using any wifi, my new Lenovo laptop refused to recognize me by camera. I forgot I had a six digit PW so I couldn’t attempt til I had wifi a week later and them with my Outlook password I got in. I reset the laptop to any earlier date cause something in Google said updates could mess up passwords
I am the administrator and I tried to eliminate the PW requirement but that is grayed out.
Time for one of my kids to fix it.

And people call them stupid. "Nasty" would be a better word.

So, adjust the power and sleep settings.
You can set it to never go to sleep or shut down the screen.
System, power and battery.

Not following your comment.
Not complaining, just
stating what happens on my system.
I have no idea what X and Y times are, nor do I care.
Everything works just fine. I've no "need" (or desire) to adjust anything.

I understood you were complaining about the computer going to sleep too quickly.
And requiring frequent reentering your password too often.
You can set the option to never have the screen go to dim or the computer go to sleep.
requiring you to have to keep putting in your password again.

See line one of my signature.
Yea, I know all about that,
Including WIN-L.

I wish just once when I’m typing in my password, the computer gives me a screen that reads, “Close Enough!”

At least it doesn't say "You're off by one character.".

Why so you type in your passwords?
Copy paste is so much easier.

By the time I
go get it to "copy" I could have typed it in faster....

That would be nice.
I typed the Acer password onto a label and stuck it to the computer. I haven't been able to get that to start consistently without asking for a password.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say: "close enough.”
