I visited all the National Parks on the west coast. Since you live in Washington state. I would leave out Olympia National Park. It is one of the four best parks in the lower states.
I would stay US1, and head for Crater Lake National Park. If time permit. Head South to Lassen Volcanic National Park in CA
Go back to US1 for the Redwood National Park.
I would also visit Yosemite and Sequoia & Kings National Parks. While on the east side of Yosemite, Visit Bodie which about 20 miles north on the east side of the park.
Next stop would Cannel Islands National Park out Ventura, Ca
After head to Joshua Tree National Park and last in Tucson is west and east of the city is Saguaro National Park.
As for portable hard drive, On trips like this I only use Mini Lacie.
I also back it up on DVD and Flash Drives. Don't trust only one back up. Remember if the laptop crashes you only have one version.

Hope this is helpful

Here is a 1TB ruggedized drive that is well reviewed on Amazon, and for < $80 for the black/orange model, the price is right. I just ordered one that is due to arrive today, so as of now do not have personal experience with it.

I just looked up the passport in PCWorld and they rank the 2TB as the best ruggedized drive there is. My neighbor has two 1Tbs that he interchanges at home and work as he travels around the country. Says he has never had a failure

Have had good luck with WD. No experience with other brands.
Wireless releases can be found in generic or branded configurations on the internet. Cowboy Studios or Neewer has some of the low-end versions. No problems so far after a year or so of intermittent use.

For wireless remote, take a look at the vello. Use one on my 5100 and D80. Got a brand new one off ebay for half the price . Check out you-tube for info on this remote.

I'll second that my Vello works from 300' and can do lag or instant. With mirror up you can get excellent tack sharp images. Check B&H.

If it's one of the four best parks in your in your opinion why would you leave it out??? Just curious. That must be a reason, yes?

Thats a desktop unit, not a portable. It still requires and external power supply/ Portables are USB powered, no external power needed.

My Seagate portable external drive works great, reminds me to update and being powered by the computer is great when traveling. Have a great time on your trip.

Because he live on Washington state. He can go there anytime, as well as Mt Rainier and North Cascades
Why waste time when you can make a 3 or 4 night trip.

I would also suggest a good tripod, a cable release, and if possible, a good quality Circular polarizing filter for the largest mm size lens you will be shooting with. If you have other lens that are smaller, you can get a downsizing ring to fit the smaller mm lens and use the polarizer on them too if needed, like a 72mm downsized to 52mm. Saves a lot on money that way, and works great, only need one filter. All of the mentioned external HD mentioned by others, all work well. Be sure and not miss the San Diego Zoo and Wild Aminal Park.
