I've set aside or given gear commensurate with their needs to family members but what is to become of the high end bodys and glass when i croak?
Of course i want o use them until the last moment but how do i get them into the hands of people who could benefit from them after that?
Are there trusts, lend /lease programs, photo school scholarships?
Does anyone here face the same questions?

Depends on your family. If you write down who you want your gear to go to after you pass and trust your family will carry out your wishes, this may be enough. If not you can spell it out in a will, but family can also contest a will. And of course each state will have specific laws on how to accomplish this.
I am researching this now. as I would like to know also.

Old, I just hope I'm driving past that garage sale at just the right time the day after you croak !
I usually arrive a few minutes AFTER they've sold the 500mm f4 for $25!!!! :lol: :lol:

PS, actually I hope you will get to shoot long enough to wear all those toys out, so you won't even have to worry about it and you go with a smile on your face and you leave a killer portfolio for yours to enjoy!

I have the same issue with my both my photographic and wood-working stuff.

My will leaves all of my personal property to my wife if I predecease her. If she goes first it splits my property equally among my heirs (5 children), I'll let them figure out who gets what, what gets sold or donated.

If I decide that some other party is to get anything, then I'll add a codicil stipulating who and what.

As a high school teacher who instructs a yearbook class, I can promise you that schools are always looking for photographic equipment. I know our school budget does not allow us to purchase "the good stuff". You might consider this philanthropic gesture.

I have a lot of toys; guns, cars, cameras, and tools. Some of my toys will be left to my kids and grandkids who know what I have and will have as much fun with the toys as I did.
The question is what to do with the rest of the toys. I have seen some of my deceased friend's toys sold or given away for very little money. My solution is to appoint in my will a long time friend who knows the value of the toys, to sell the toys and give the money to my wife.

I also knew a guy who bought a lot of guns and always told his wife that the guns only cost a hundred dollars, about 10% of what he paid. This kept her from getting too upset. So when he died she sold them for $50 each. This was not the best plan either.

You can leave to a promising local photographer, a student, or work with someone in the local camera club.

You could also make sure they are sold at market value and add the $ to your estate or donate the $ to a charity.

Don't forget to decide who gets your images and the copyright and other rights to them.

Incidentally, this question comes up among some prominent people. MLK left a legacy of good works, but his family is in the midst of vicious legal battles over who gets the valuable "goodies" like his favorite and historical personal bible and other artifacts.
