TREES
by: Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)

THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Sadly Joyce Kilmer was an American "Doughboy" serving in World War I. He was killed in France not long after constructing this beautiful poem.

Very lovely. You also brought to mind another poem.

I think that I shall never see
The dollar that I loaned to thee;

A dollar that I could have spent
On many forms of merriment.

The one I loaned to you so gladly
Is now the one I need so badly.

For whose return I had great hope
Just like an optimistic dope.

For dollars loaned to folks like thee
Are not returned to fools like me.

With apologies to Joyce Kilmer.

Nice. A fitting attribute to this poem.
