I currently have an HP Photosmart 6520, but I am unsatisfied with the color and quality of prints it produces. The colors are off, as in, skin tones seem to have a slightly yellowish or orange cast to them, and when printing 8x10's, it leaves horizontal bars across the printed image. The images also seem to be on the fuzzy side. So I am considering a different printer. The Canon PIxma MG7120 has been suggested to me as being a reasonably priced ($203.00) printer that produces decent quality prints. I only do prints for personal and family purposes, and have no intention of entering any photo contests. I just want decent quality prints. Thanks.

Have you ever run a cleaning cycle on your printer, the horizontal bar across your images suggest that you have dirty nozzles?
Hi Far North,
Can't go wrong with Canon. I've had five or six of them in the last few years. Still have three on deck that always do well.
I'd look at Consumer Reports to check if they have done tests on printers lately. Always good advice there.
Happy printing,

Thanks for the input. I've heard good things about canon, but was looking for some confirmation. Seems HP stuff, at least at the consumer level is just run-of-the-mill. While I'm no professional, or even mid-level amateur, I do like to have what I do turn out well and be something someone will enjoy looking at.
Epson makes good printers especially in their top models..
Agree that it sounds like you need to clean your print head. This is true of ANY ink jet printer regardless of brand.
You can spend $1000 on a printer and still have crap prints if you don't maintain it.

Over the years I have had all the makes of printer.
For past 3 years I have been on a Canon and it beats all the others hands down easily!. So reliable and easy to use. The inks are easy to insert and no problems with non canon brand.
I have the 5 ink version and print photos for myself to frame - sometimes on canvas and it does a very good job for an mid range model.
All the other printers have been problematic but I can't believe I have had no problems and it runs so well. I use it quite a bit too.
Highly recommended printer whichever Canon model you go for.
If you check on ebay, there are numerous brand new Canon Pixma Pro 100 printers for sale in that price range. They are usually ones that people have gotten as a bonus for purchasing a new Canon camera and have removed the barcode to send in for a rebate. The printers still have the full warranty and usually come with a 50 pack of 13 x 19 Canon paper. Good deal for sure and a great printer, check the reviews.

I, on the other hand, have had GREAT results with Epson printers. The R3000 is the one I have and it has technology to reduce print head clogging. I've had it 2 yrs and never had to clean it, despite thousands of prints. It's a 9 ink system. Ink is expensive, but great results.
I've never had a Canon printer, so I can't say anything about them. All I know is that my Epson R1800 lasted nearly 10 years, so when I see someone say he's had numerous Canon printers and still has three that work, I wince.
When my R1800 gave up the ghost, I didn't hesitate and bought an Epson SureColor P600. "Sure Color" is their new line. Since I'd always been able to let my printing be done with the printer managing the color, I hoped and was relieved to see that the P600 works the same way. It's prints are beautiful--I must have a good printer!--and the first three I brought to my camera club placed 1st, 1st, and 2nd in our competition.
Canon? Epson? Your call. Good luck making your decision.
I have had an Epson Artisan 837 for years and I keep saying I am going to upgrade it. Unfortunately, it never gives me a reason to. It prints beautifully ( I've had professionals ask me who does my printing), it is reasonable on ink, and I have never had a single problem with it nor done any maintenance on it.
Check the reviews and decide for yourself.
I have an HP Photosmart, a Canon Pro 9000 Mark II and an Epson Pro 3800. The HP is not good for photos and is used only for letters and such. The Canon produces good color and is used mostly for proofs, family snapshots and greeting cards. The Epson produces excellent color and is used for archival quality prints on paper and canvas.
The HP and Canon use dyes, which will fade, sometimes over a rather short time, depending on exposure to UV. The Epson uses pigments, which are long lasting and will not fade anytime within my lifetime.
All prints for that I sell are produced on the Epson.

I have good success with Epson Printers and have friends with similar experience with Canon printers as well.
