More from Dolly Sods, WV.
Last year I posted several shots I made in this area in WV during the Autumn season of 2013. Dolly Sods at an elevation of 3,734 feet is a beautiful location as part of the Monongahala National Forest with breath taking scenery and some of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever experienced.
The first shot shows the vegetation at this time of the year and some of the solid rocks present in the terrain, hard and difficult to walk by before dawn. Because of the elevation the temperature sometimes get very cold near freezing so appropriate precautions are necessary to keep warm.
The second shot shows the night sky over the mountains. The rock in the foreground was illuminated for several seconds using a LED light, a hit and miss situation since it is impossible to predict the final outcome of the exposure. I did this using Live View at ISO 6400 with the lens wide open and a shutter speed of 25 sec.
The third shot was immediately after sunrise. I used the tele side of my 28-105 f3.5-4.5 AF-D lens to compress the view of the mountains making them appear closer than they actually were.
The last shot is that of one of the many rocky structures found in this area also shortly after sunrise.
The majority of the files needed color correction due to the strong cyan cast present. Some of them were edited using Topaz Adjust 5 modifying the effect to my taste to make it look more natural.
I used my D7000 on a Gitzo tripod with a RRS ballhead and an electronic cable to release the shutter. My other lens for some of the shots was the 12-24 f4 AF-S mostly set to 24mm focal length.
If you live close to this area do not miss it during your next trip to WV. I bet you will not regret it and at the end of the day you are going to walk out with some spectacular shots of these beautiful mountains.
Enjoy!

Beautiful, especially night stars and the third one.
Thank you all for your comments.
Breathtaking images. Beautifully composed.
Thank you Linda for your kindness.
Wonderful shots ... and as other have said yet another entry for my bucket list. Hopefully, after my job goes away and I 'retire' next year, I can start working on that incredibly long list ... and this will be one of the first places I visit.
