Thank you very much for all your perspectives. As always, a mix of pros and cons. I bought the Fuji XT-1 partly because of the capability of changing lenses. I only have the 18-55 and I'm happy with it, but thought I'd think about expanding my ability to do photos in lower light. I know a prime limits you to just that range though
...???what to do?
I have the same camera but chose the 18-135 as my kit lens. Then I bought the 14mm prime. Just completed a 7700 mile driving trip through Montana, Wyoming, Canada, Washington, Oregon, and California. In addition we went to Alaska traveled by train, coach, and back to the states in a 7 day cruise. Carried these lenses and the camera and got some great photographs. Loved the camera and lenses.
Sounds like a lovely trip...except that you didn't hit South Dakota where I live! I'm glad your camera worked for you for that trip...I'll look at the 14 mm, as well. Once you start to love photography...so many decisions await you, but it is a wonderful hobby! Thanks for your input.

South Dakota... EXCELLENT state for the craft of photography. My mom was from SD and we had many visits to relatives in that area while I was growing up.
Such a range of photographic scenery and subject. I've travelled to SD for much of it's scenery... Black Hills, Badlands, Deadwood, old museums of history of the Midwest, Bikers in Sturgis SD, and so much more.
Huron, Mitchell, The Corn Palace (known by locals as the worlds largest bird feeder).
The Corn Palace has been redecorated with Ears of Corn every year for decades and left for the year in that theme.

Huron or Mitchell is the home of one of the "Charlies Angels. Cheerleader, and the buffet where she worked, has her first paycheck framed and posted on the wall.
Native American history... The list goes on. Have fun.
So many people know so little of the Dakota's.
I did visit SD. Saw the Bad Lands, Mt Rushmore, Black Hills, and Deadwood. Loved your state.
Thanks...we enjoy it. I live in Sturgis and enjoy it except for about a month in the summer...so it goes. I'm not a fan of the rally! Anyway, we do have a beautiful state. Thanks for the accolades.
Just returned from Italy where I took my Fuji kit consisting of an X-pro 1 body and 23, 35 and 60 mm lenses. During 3 weeks of travel from Rome to Tuscany to Venice I used the 23mm almost exclusively, taking out the 60mm once and the 35 never. Even with bad knees, I zoomed using my feet and found that the 23 allowed me enough wide-angle for interiors and landscapes but also distortion-free closeups when necessary. It's a little more expensive, but if only one lens is in the budget, this would be the one I would recommend.
Thanks so much...I'll consider that. Hope you had a great trip to Italy.
