$100 is a lot to me, so I bought aluminum. I'm very happy with it and doubt there is much of a difference when it comes to vibration between CF and Al.
it DOES get very cold in the winter, fortunately mine has a foam area for carrying it.

There was a time I used to tell people that a cheap tripod $20.00 is better than no tripod. recently I read an article from a guy who had the $20.00 tripod. It fell over when he bumped it and he broke a lens. So now I say buy as much tripod as you can afford.

Plamps are devices use to hold flowers, etc. when photographing them in windy conditions. One end of the thing has a serious clamp to attach to a tripod, or wooden stake, or something stationary. Then there is a piece of flexible material about 18" in length with another delicate clamp to hold the flower or stem. Plantclamp.

Very robust discussion and above..I guess I should have mentioned that I'll be doing some summiting and day long hikes in Ecuador and therefore need the weight to be low (though I'm used to carrying a 6 pounder). I'm just too tired to do that anymore and it just makes me lazy. My body is a canon 6d and my lenses are 24-105 f4, 70-200 f4 and rokinon 14mm f2.8 prime, yonguo flash. Oh and has anyone ever heard of the zomei c669c tripod? Quality?

So, now you have a compromise for convenience .....

Perhaps, but the difference was not great. As it is, it's about 1,000% better than what I had previously...heavier than the plastic crap I had, but I'll take it. One time, I pushed down on the old tripod and the legs started bending! It was part of a package deal I got with my first DSLR (A330) that I bought on a Black Friday from a now bankrupt electronics superstore.

Yes. Generally speaking, this is a very cheaply make tripod, with far too many leg sections, skinny top tube, and a center column with a horrible ball head - pretty much the same as all the other sub-$200 tripods out there.

I can personally vouch for the Feisol CT3442, which I have used with a 300mm lens, and was perfectly stable - with the Feisol CB50 ball head, I think it's around 3 lbs. I don't own one, but have borrowed one from a friend from time to time. I do own their CT3472, and it is more stable than a Gitzo Series 3 (which is to be expected - the top tube is larger diameter - 37 vs 32mm) and use it regularly. It is heavier, but more stable. I can also vouch for the Sirui T-2205X, which I have also borrowed - almost as stable as the Feisol, and packs down a little smaller. With their K30X ball head, you have a great combo.
