Trouble downloading from Camera to computer

Has anyone had trouble downloading from an SD card to a computer once the camera number has gone past 9999 and back to zero. Photos are on the card but don't show when exporting them to the computer. I usually check the box that says don't download duplicates but thought that there might be photos with those numbers so unchecked the box, didn't make any difference?? I have searched the internet to find a solution but haven't run into anything yet.

You might try a card reader.

Couple of comments:
1) the camera goes to 0001, not 0000
2) the camera creates a new folder on the card so img0001 in folder F01 is distinct from img0001 in F02
Questions:
1) What software are you using? The camera's software loaded to your computer will understand the operations described above
2) If you connect the camera to the computer via a USB cord, you should also be able to navigate the camera like a mounted drive and select and copy files to the computer just like any other folder structure.

Thanks for your reply, I am using Apple Aperture. Before the rollover to 0001 from 9999 I was able to download all the photos on the card from the camera via USB and select the photos I wanted to export into Aperture. Since the rollover, the photos numbered 0001 and beyond don't even show up so I can select or not select.

Once your camera goes back to 0001, there are probably previous files on your computer with the same file numbers. That could be confusing your computer. To avoid the computer confusion you need to change the prefix. For example, if your prefix is DSC ( or some other prefix) you need change the prefix to something else 1DS for example. Some people use their initials. If your name is Luv Travlin you might use 1LT then when you run through the numbers again change it to 2LT. Some use something to indicate the camera for example if you have a D5 you might use 1D5 then 2D5 and so on. This way could be helpful if you have multiple cameras.

Interesting situation. Your camera has numbered your pictures from 1 - 9999. Now it's starting over, and your computer, wisely, won't download and wipe out the original 1, 2, 3, etc. Offhand, I'd say you could do a bulk rename of photos on your computer, adding "A" to the beginning. I'm sure there are other solutions.

My computer prompts me that "files already exist" with that number and do I want to use new numbers or overwrite. If I choose new number, it adds a -1 to the end of the number. That makes it easy to keep them separate.

What error messages are you receiving, if any?

Three solutions:
(1) rename the old files to add a prefix or suffix. That might present problems if you look for photos by number
(2) import the new pictures to a new folder. Doesn't fix the existence of duplicate file names but it separates them so they're less of a problem.
(3) develop the habit of renaming all your photos with meaningful names. That way you can do a search for something like "Suzie's Birthday Party" instead of having to look up the number for the photo you want and then look for "DSC_4293" or whatever. Yes, since you have 9999 old photos in there it would be a pain to have to rename them all with new names, so maybe you could just do that for the new photos.

If you use Lightroom, that program can do that on import. Plug in your card, give LR the new name, and copy the files to your hard drive. If you don't use LR, there are other programs that will do the import and change the names. The one I use is "Downloader Pro", which I've been using for many years. When you connect the card to your computer, this program starts up and shows you thumbnails of all the photos on your card. It also asks for a "job code", which could be the name you want to put on your files. You can then select the ones you want (it allows you to select all the photos on a particular date or group of dates or even individual photos). The program is configurable, so you can customize what the new file name looks like, and also you can specify the folder you want the files to go to. For example, my file names look like "Suzie's Birthday 20161206 005.NEF" (I shoot Nikon, raw only). It has the descriptive name (Suzie's Birthday), the date the photo was taken (20161206, the date in YYYYMMDD format, which sorts the same either numerically or chronologically), and an index number (which can be more than 3 digits if needed). Adding the date to the file name will guard against duplicate file names (since presumably Suzie's Birthday is an annual event).

The program cost me $30 about 8 years ago, but it has really made it possible to find things since they have descriptive names rather than just a number. I think it was a minor expense and a major improvement to my piling system.

Try downloading the files to a different directory on the computer. I create one for each subject and have never had a problem when the camera rolled over after 10,000 pictures.

I've ben downloading images by attaching my Canon camera to my iMac and using EOS utilities. Upgraded to Sierra OS and suddenly couldn't download images. Google told me that Canon hasn't produced an upgraded utility compatible with Sierra, so I bought a card reader for $20. Much faster. Should have done it years ago.

Interesting question. My camera has just rolled over within the last week or so, but I have had no difficulty downloading new files. I go direct from SD card to computer using View NXi.
