hi all, on my 7d/2 noticed i had a spot in the view finder so i took the lens off and looked at the mirror. i must say that i really never looked closely to the inside of the body. i have a brush and a rocket blower just in case i needed them,well the brush worked well and removed the dust i didn't need the blower this time. i have two questions. first question looking at the very bottom of the mirror there is a space that stays open and it looks normal to me is that normal? and the second which is more important when looking at that space that is what i think is one of the curtains if using a blower am i over thinking this, if your blowing dust off of the mirror will there be a chance of just moving the dust that was on the mirror to the curtain which will have a greater chance of jumping to the sensor when things are moving? any opp on blowers thanks bill

Visible Dust sells sensor cleaning brushes that get a static charge when blown with compressed canned air. The brush then attracts dust which sticks to the brush. Blow the brush with air again you're good to go again.

I wonder if the open space you mention, is where the AF module is. The AF module in a DSLR camera is situated at the bottom of the camera. This cutaway view shows the AF module under the mirror.

I never blow air on the mirror although I understand it's OK to do that. The mirror flips up and down so fast. it seems like dust would clear off the mirror. Usually dust seen in the viewfinder is on the focusing screen. The focusing screen is the rectangular plate at the top of the mirror box.

I wouldn't use the Rocket blower. I got the Koh Global Hepa Jet Air II filtered blower. It has a large hepa filter, an anti-static filter, a one-way check valve, and a medical grade PVC bulb. Most blowers have a rubber bulb that can shed fine particles. The PVC bulb won't do that. It's available from Adorama Camera or it can be ordered directly from Koh Global.

Here's something else I have used if there's dust on the focusing screen that can't be removed with the blower. Visible Dust makes swabs with an end that is at a 45 degree angle. It makes it easier to reach the focusing screen at the top of the mirror box. Their green cleaning solution is their most mild cleaner and is OK for the focusing screens.
