This I will say about Nikon, especially if you were to start out with say a D610. As far as backward compatibility
with the lenses. If a lens was made in the 1950's you can use it on a new Nikon camera. FX vs DX, FX=full frame
DX=a smaller frame. It relates to the sensor size on your camera. Thats the distinct advantage with Nikon. I could be wrong. Aim high and have fun. the one thing about digital is that you can learn quicker as u go.

The difference is significant in print form. In large print the imperfections are glaring while the perfections are endearing. Most of this is hidden on an LCD. Especially small, average resolution and uncalibrated displays. What looks wonderful and vividly colored may be out of gamut and can't be printed to any resemblance of the display.

I could not tell you as I don't have an 85 mm lens but I know the ones I have. And I am not sure what you are asking. Is that an 85 mm f1.8 set at 5.6 aperture or a f1.4 ? The fact that I am discriminating between a 1.4 and 1.8 indicates I know there is a difference. And for the lenses I have, I have read and researched the differences and have seen the differences and can make the decision or the choice if this is important or not. This level of detail is important in your progression as a photographer and gives you the ability to speak with, learn and collaborate with others.

If you want to be a good photographer you need to print. Print is feedback. It tells your where there were error or omissions.

Thanks for the explanation. That's why I'm here to progress. I dabbled in the 90 ' with film. Then bought digital in the early part of 2000's. I am at a point where I have a very strong desire to grow.

I would buy the f2.8 just because the brighter image in the viewfinder would be worth the extra cost to me. Correct me, if I'm wrong about the brighter image.

If you can afford it f/2.8 does rock.
I'm an f-stop freak
Ok speaking of older lenses.
I picked up an old Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8
Wow that lens rocks.........

I think many in these forums don't care. But for those that do, these discriminating facts are important. I strive to be a very good photographer. I want to shoot, enlarge, print, display (gallery and online) and sell my work. And while you think that these differences are negligible, in print and in a large print the differences are blinding. An slightly unsharp image printed on a 8x10 is an embarrassing and unsellable blurr at 20 x30.

I do care about the quality and detail of my images. Just for the sake of I will print some of the pics I have taken with these lenses; for my personal gratification. You shouldn't paint with such a broad brush. Just because a lens is older doesn't mean it isn't good quality.

I am in the same situation, but when on extended backpacking trips or traveling, where space and weight is a consideration I have no hesitation getting F4 lenses from NPS, and using a D610, though I have F2.8 up through 300mm, then a 600mm F4 for my regular stuff. The tripod collar from RRS is really excellent, even for the F2.8 version - way better than OEM.

Here is an alternative.
Nikon 35-135m f/3.5-4.5 AF
Shot with my D610
Sorry for pushing the older lenses.
But if you don't want to blow a hole in
your budget then here goes.
I will ultimately upgrade to newer maybe but for
now as I just bought my D610 at the end of last year.
Am in need of a broad range of lenses that won't break the bank
your budget

Nikon 35-135 f/3.5-4.5

I will eventually get a 2.8 80-200 for certain situations.
But what I have noticed about about an 2.8 vs a 4 is that wou don't have to turn up the iso as high with a 1.4 1.8 2.8.
Just my opinion

I love my D610...
I don't know if its paranoia
or just the thrill of having an FX camera but
my D610 rarely leaves my side.
