Sadly Joyce Kilmer was an American "Doughboy" serving in World War I. He was killed in France not long after constructing this beautiful poem.
I have been to CR as well. The 18-200mm lens should handle anything you encounter. I wouldn't be too concerned about fer de lances, or even crocodiles. Just don't miss all the photo ops! When we saw three toucans perched in the tree above us, our guide excitedly shouted, "Toucan, toucan, toucan! You know what you've got? A sixpack!"

As a high school teacher who instructs a yearbook class, I can promise you that schools are always looking for photographic equipment. I know our school budget does not allow us to purchase "the good stuff". You might consider this philanthropic gesture.
There have been many of these corporate "boo boos". In the 1970's Sony held both the copyrights to the beta system and the VHS system. They were ordered by the FTC to surrender the rights to one of these systems. Sony chose to keep the exclusive rights to the beta system over the VHS system. Someone lost his job over that one...
