With binoculars as in lenses it is all about the glass. Buy the best you can afford. The difference in light capture is dramatic and makes a world of difference. As previously commented, 8x42 or 10x42 are most common for birders.
If you can, Swarovski, Zeiss or Leica are great from $1000-3000. A more modestly priced Nikon Monarch 7 is well respected. Depending on where you live it is best to go to a binocular specialty shop where you can look through then to see the difference. Here in SoCal I recommend https://www.optics4birding.com/ who has a wide selection.

Beautiful shots. When I see them in trees, they have often been singing I wonder if they are looking for a mate.

All About Birds, says “ Behavior
Spotted Towhees hop over the ground beneath dense tangles of shrubs, scratching in leaf litter for food. They also climb into lower branches to search for insects and fruits, or to deliver their quick, buzzy song. Towhees can fly long distances, but more often make short, slow flights between patches of cover.”

But they have been over my 6 foot high head, calling.

If I'm doing photography, I use my cameras. If I wish to communicate, I use my iPhone. The only reason my iPhone gets involved with photography is one application that runs only on an iPhone and nails exposure/processing every time.

Bob-

Ditto. What app are you referring to? The one that comes with the phone or another add on?

If it is the photographer that makes the shot but the camera or lens that takes the shot.

All your camera equipment has been destroyed in a flood and your insurance doesn't cover "acts of God".
Casper the Friendly Ghost offers you two options:

1. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $7,000 and one lens not to exceed $2500
or;
2. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $2500 and one lens not to exceed $7000.

No dodging around here, Casper is only offering two choices

I don't need to do any filtering or searching. Hehe. Got my Tamron 150-600 mm in Feb. or Mar. Spent the summer using it every chance I got in between rain. Used some others for specific purposes, but the grandkids weren't in any summer sports this year. Mostly wildlife shots.

And what zoom was most prevalent with shots taken with that lens

I am looking at the Acratech GP, the RRS B-55 and the Arca-Swiss Monoball Z-1

Does anyone that uses the Acratech since 2014 when this post was last active have any updates? Thank you

Thank you. One more question. Why would a shorter lens provide more depth of field? I thought it was a function of aperture. How/Why does the length of the lens affect DOF?

Thank you for posting the tutorial. What tripod and ball head were you using?

Classic picture of the White-breasted Nuthatch, how long were "on the bird"?
