Rocket, child, just get yourself back on the porch, it's really dangerous here in the street. If you don't have what it takes, that rocking chair up there on the porch(the one that says SACNTUARY on it), might be a good place to watch from while the men sort this thing out down here in the street!!!!!

My advice is to go to a camera shop and handle the cameras to see if one fits you better than another. All of them are good cameras with great lenses, but the one that fits your hand, eye, and has the menu that makes the most sense to you will be the one that's the most likely to become that extension of you that it needs be so you can concentrate on the image being made and not be distracted by the camera.

Welcome Sherry you can't find a better place to hang out than this one. The folks here will send you some great advise. Take your time and do some research on different cameras. I bought a real nice Nikon DSLR from Costco. Good luck and happy shooting.

Rent to try each before you decide to buy. Both will serve your photography needs. Others likely will weigh in here with their strong views. But you must decide in the end what suits you. Renting will help you decide.

As an alternative, you could buy a point-and-shoot camera to get your feet wet. The theory here: You can learn the three main concepts of photography even with a P&S camera: Composition, Exposure, and Subject.

Good luck.

I own two Canon's and that is my preference but you won't catch me down playing Nikon. Both are excellent but you will need to decide what fits you.

I use a Sony a77 Mk. 2 camera, and it has many features for the beginner, as well as for amateurs and pros.

You can't fix people who use "stupid" as a noun.

Both Canon, and Nikon, are good, and can do pretty much whatever you want. Nikon tends to have more lenses, while some of Canon's lenses are sharper, or have more macro capability. If you want frame filling close ups of tiny spiders, go with Canon. Otherwise, flip a coin. Some people swear by mirrorless, or bridge cameras, or whatever, but you are interested in DSLRs. I have owned both Canons, and Nikons. Personally, I prefer the control layouts on most Nikons to those on most Canons. You may, or may not, feel the same. Neither is any better than the other, over all...though one may shine over the other in one, or two, regards. Each has it's benefits, and it's drawbacks. Decide what features you want most, and go for the camera that has them. Decide on: how many Megapixels you want, what shutter speeds you need, whether you want in camera panorama capability, in camera image overlay capability, HDR capability, how fast a burst rate you want, what size sensor you want, how many Auto Focus Points you want, whether you want a tilt / vari-angle monitor screen, a touch screen, or such. Find the make, and model, camera which has the features you want in your price range. It may be a Nikon, or a Canon. Only you can say which features are, and are not, worthwhile to you.

Nikon, and Canon, have more lenses available than do Sony, or Olympus, or such. Pentax may have more lenses, but tend to have fewer Megapixels, fewer shutter speed choices, etc. Not many makes / models have in camera Panorama, and in camera Image Overlay, but the Nikon D3300 does. You may like those features, or not. You can get a camera without them, and manage the effects in an editor like Photoshop. The D3300 is being phased out soon, as the D3500 will come in to replace it as the Nikon Entry Level model. You can wait until a Christmas sale, and buy a D3300 at a bargain rate, as they try to clear shelf space for the D3500, or you can wait for the D3500 to become available...probably by Christmas this year, or by March of next year.

Kuzano, it's not a matter of agreeing or not.
