I only use Sandisk. When I started in digital, the first cards I bought were Sandisk.
At that time Nikon would only recommend Lexar and Sandisk. I never had a problem with Sandisk.
After download to computer and a backup, format the card in camera.

These banks are set for different type of photography. (sports, portraits, macro etc)

I have both. I you my DX cameras for photography such as sports, macro, etc when my distances to the subject matters.
For portraits and landscape, I use a FX (full frame) body. If you find the DX format fits your needs. Don't move up.

the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 is one great lens. I use this lens on my Nikon d300 and D800.
The 85mm is mainly a portrait lens (excellent for head and 3/4 shots.
The 50mm lenses on your Nikon D90 is really a 75mm lenses and the 85mm is a 127mm. These are perfect head and 3 quarter shots.
I use a 2TB external hard drive hook up in my desk top computer. When not coping it is unplug.
For traveling I use Lacie Mini portable hard drive. I also backup my images on flash drives and DVD.

I'm surprise that the lens won't attach to both bodies. I have old lenses from the film days. I never trade or sold them. Now they came out of the cases and are being used today.
My Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 is in use a lot. Also I taking out my old 24-120mm lenses and shoot with it. The 24-120mm lenses sharper today than ever before.
My prime lenses work great.
