When starting my Dell Inspiron laptop it shows the Dell logo and a small circle of flashing lights. Then the screen goes dark for a while, then the logo reappears. Then it repeats.

I called Dell support. They say it's a software problem. They will fix it for $99 but all data will probably be lost.

Any thoughts/suggestions? Should I try the Geek Squad? Is there anything I could try myself? I looked online but couldn't find anything useful. Would really appreciate some guidance on how to proceed.

P.S. I have most of the data backed up, including all of my photos, which are on an external drive.

At the sign-in screen, hold the Shift Key down while you select Power > Restart. After your PC restarts to the Choose an Option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. After you are in Safe mode go to a command prompt screen and type chkdsk c: /f {press enter} and let it complete (takes a while)
it will reboot and should have fixed most common software issue...good luck

I"ll double check the sticks and make sure they are firmly seated. The computer originally had 8GB of Ram. I swapped out 2-2 GB sticks several years ago with 2-4GB sticks with no issues giving me the 12GBs. I'm tempted to just leave the 2-4GB sticks in place and remove the other 2-2GB sticks. That brings up a question, can I use 2-8GB sticks and leave the other slots empty?

Lots of good ideas by the contributors. If you can get it working with the old Ram you might
see if your machine is compatible with a SSD hard drive. I switched out an old hard drive by cloning
it to a new SSD and now it's much faster...like a new machine. Check to make sure the hard drive connections are compatible since your machine is so old before you do this...good luck.

One more thing I didn't see mentioned in the many very good suggestions above...
check carefully for a paper-jam.

Hello Grace98, Just one more suggestion for you after so many other replies. Consider getting an external 'My Cloud' from
Western Digital. My model is Ex2 Ultra and has 12TB of storage. It automatically backs up your pictures. Any knowledgeable
computer person should be able to install it. Good luck.

Hello rpm....have you tried doing a search? If you can remember the name of the folder(s) where your photos are located, enter it in the search box and if it exists, the search should find it.
From there you can move it where you want. Good luck.

For anyone wishing to explore this complicated issue further, I would recommend The Nuremberg Trial by Ann Tusa and John Tusa, Published in 2010. It's a long book some 500 pages and discusses the trial itself and the legal conundrums the jurists faced in passing judgement on histories worst criminals. For example the Russians at first wanted to execute hundreds of top Nazis with no trial at all.

One possible cause of your problem that I didn't see mentioned
among the many very good suggestions, was one or more brief
power interruptions during the night. This often happens here in south Florida. I had a similar problem which was helped (but not entirely eliminated) by using a good power backup.

Reboot then try again after turning off any antiviral programs.
In addition, download only when all other programs are closed.
Also check if you have enough space on your hard-drive to download.

Don't forget to look in your computers recycle bin. If you somehow accidentally deleted them they may be there. Anyway nothing to lose and worth the try.
